The tiny diner was located in AJ’s neighborhood. He showed me his house on the way there, and I was happy to see it was even a little smaller than mine. We really belonged to the same world. And since our boyfriends both lived across the borders of the other world, AJ and I understood each other like no one else—despite having such different personalities.

“I’m telling you, this is going to be the best meal you’ve ever had,” he said, after ordering the famous burger he’d been pitching to me all week.

“We’ll see.” The waitress seemed more worried about the TV behind the counter than about sending our order to the kitchen, so my hopes weren’t high.

“I know, the service sucks. But I promise you, the burger is worth it. Even their veggie option is out of this world! Matt is crazy about this place.” He grinned.

I held back a smile, studying his face. It had lit up at the mention of his boyfriend’s name. “You never talk to me about Matt…”

AJ dropped his eyes. Which I thought was cute, because this seemed to be the only subject he was shy about.

“You don’t have to—if you don’t want,” I continued. “I just…I don’t know. I guess I just realized we’re always talking about me. Never about you.”

“What do you want to know?” His voice was low.

I thought my first question would be about Matt, but all of a sudden, something else crossed my mind. “Why didn’t you want to keep playing with Alec? I mean, if James is still in the band, why didn’t you—”

“I never felt like I was good enough to play professionally,” he said with a shrug. “I started playing with them for fun. It was never serious for me—like it was for Alec.”

“Oh.” I really wasn’t expecting that. From what Alec had told me, I was guessing it’d been because of the disagreement between him and the rest of the band. I thought AJ had been offended or something. “Are you still friends with the others, then?”

“James, yeah—love that dude. But Zach…” He rolled his eyes. “He’s too stubborn, you know?”

“No, actually. Everybody refuses to tell me anything about him…” I glanced up at AJ from under my lashes.

He laughed out loud. “I assure you there’s a good reason for that, miss. So, don’t you try to take advantage of me!”

“Come on, is he really that bad?” I made a pleading face.

“Yes! He’s been a jerk to Alec for years! Now, drop it, okay? That is all you need to know about him.”

“Fine,” I muttered. “I’ll ask him next time.”

“What do you mean next time?” AJ narrowed his eyes.

“We talked a little bit at the Halloween party. And to be honest, he seemed pretty nice before Alec arrived—as if he was genuinely worried about me. I think he was trying to—”

AJ shook his head. “It’s unbelievable how he does it…”

“Does what?”

“Tricks people into thinking whatever it is that he wants you to think.” He snorted. “If
